Rigoletto met opera professional#
He encounters Sparafucile, a professional assassin, who offers his services. Still, Verdi would be glad that his show is making money, and the cast-which includes Željko Lučić, Diana Damrau, Piotr Beczala, and, not least, the men of the Met chorus-is outstanding Michele Mariotti conducts with elegant aplomb. 16 at 1: Sleek, entertaining, and probably critic-proof, the Mets new Rigoletto is a success on its own terms. Tenors Piotr Beczala and Stephen Costello alternate as the licentious Duke. Rigoletto hurries home, disturbed by Monterones curse. (He may want to rethink the idea of turning Count Monterone into an Arab sheikh, however.) But it is in the final act that the director of such Broadway hits as “American Idiot” finds himself out of his depth: with the original locale of a desolate rustic inn replaced by a seedy urban bar, Gilda’s self-sacrifice plays like bland comedy and the opera’s tragic core is tossed away. Rigoletto Met Opera on Demand delivers instant access to more than 500 Met performances, including Live in HD videos, classic telecasts and radio broadcasts. Michele Mariotti conducts the Met orchestra with a pacy energy, moving on from a stodgy start to hold everything together well. Michael Mayer’s new setting for the opera is satin-smooth, with the avarice and rough sexuality of the Duke of Mantua’s Renaissance court finding a good enough parallel in Rat Pack-era Las Vegas. 16 at 1: Sleek, entertaining, and probably critic-proof, the Met’s new “Rigoletto” is a success on its own terms. George Loomis JanuBartlett Sher’s production of Rigoletto, which opened at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on New Year’s Eve, is set in Germany during the Weimar Republic, far removed.
